Are you looking for proactive maintenance for your computers or computer network?

Or, maybe you are just wondering what “proactive maintenance” is.  Maybe you have heard of being proactive with your IT support, but are wondering if it’s actually worth the trouble.

Let me just say right now that anything that is proactively maintained will cost you less in the long run.  This is true for a vehicle, a house, or your health.

Just think about what not changing your oil will do to your engine.  Or, not fixing a leaky roof will do to your home.  Also, imagine never going to the doctor, to get those essential exams and checkups.

I like to compare proactive maintenance to going to the dentist.  Everyone knows that if they brush their teeth, that they probably won’t get bad news at their next dentist’s appointment.  But, even though they brush, they go to the dentist anyway… just in case.  They scrape your teeth, do a few checks, and you are on your way.  Do you stop brushing?  No.  Do you never go back to the dentist?  No.

So, if you don’t ignore your teeth, why would you ignore your technology?  If your productivity depends on your computers to be up and running, not properly maintaining them is similar to ignoring your pearly whites.  Just like brushing, there are certain things that need to be done every day to keep your computers safe (such as updating your antivirus and backing up your data).  There are also certain things that need to be done on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis.

Maintaining a checklist like this takes a lot of discipline.  And if you have more than 10 computers and a server, it may take hiring an IT person.
